After months of trying to decide on a wedding date. My fiance decides that he really wants to get married  on January 20th, 2013. Our anniversary is in January, therefore he feels that January is an important month for us.  I really want to have our wedding in a month that is warm. I am not opposed to January 20th, however I am really nervous about inclement weather. It is normally really cold and snowy here in NY in January. I'm confused and I feel like we just took 10 steps forward yet took 15 steps backwards. Any suggestions? Help!

I don't know where in NY you live, but yes, weather can be a concern.  What does he say when you bring up the weather?  Would most of your guests live in town, where bad weather wouldn't effect the travel as much?  At least he is trying to pick a date that has special meaning to you, but the only thing I'm sure any of us can say is that you need to talk to him.

If you end up stuck with this date, try to look on the bright side- you won't be melting in in your dress, there are lots of cute wrap accessories, and it's a time of year that you can do something a little different with.  Think dark, rich colors, non-floral centerpieces, or bright winter-themed things.  I think any time of year can be a lot of fun for a wedding.

Thank you for your advice. We live in Brooklyn, NY. I have mentioned weather and his response is "everyone will be inside". Most of family members and friends live near by however there are many people that will be traveling from Boston, Philadelphia and Miami.

I am really nervous about getting married in the cold. I did some research and found out that our average temp is unusually 32 degree's in January. Which is basically the freezing mark :-o  I love the colors you suggested i will definitely consider it if i am stuck with that date.

I think you do have some legitimate concerns about the weather, snow is pretty much guaranteed up there that time of year, plus there has already been snowfall, so the chances of guests getting stranded at airports or delayed is very real.

I think you all have plenty of time to decide, but I would definitely talk to him and see if you can't both come to a compromise, perhaps April or May, when it is warmer but not blistering hot either. You could also try doing a pro/con list together, one for Jan and the other for a warmer month- that may help him better see where you are coming from and maybe help you both reach a compromise.  Good luck!

My FI and I ended up picking December 22, 2012 because of my school schedule (I'm a veterinary student).  I always pictured a warmer wedding, but we really didn't have that many options (unless we wanted to wait another 3+years).  We're getting married just west of Cleveland, OH and the avg temp in December is around 25 degrees.  I also hate cold and I've always disliked winter.  Weather is a concern of ours as well since we are just outside of the snow belt, but we are hoping for the best.  We're looking into wedding insurance just in case. The nice thing so far is that most venues have plenty of openings in the winter and prices are a little lower.  Good luck!

I would also say, I have seen some amazing wedding pics in the snow.  I was actually hoping for snow on my wedding day.  I think its romantic.

I am getting married January 21st 2012 in Chicago (which has very similiar winters to New York--if not snowier). However, I always loved winter and the date worked out perfect for our schedules. We remain optimistic about the weather--yes, there may be a blizzard but people are use to it! Just thnk about it this way--it is normal for it to be snowy and cold in NY, so people are going to be prepared for it. There will be snow plows and salt trucks on the streets. Guests will give extra time for the weather. And your vendors will have done winter weddings before, so it won't be new to them! Our colors are mainly silver and white, and I've had a lot of fun with the theme. I've incorporated a lot of snowflakes and crysral branches. I think Winter is the most romantic season (especially in a cold/snowy climate) so it is the perfect time to have a wedding!

Best of luck to you and your fiance!
